They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are some things that are universally agreed upon. When designing a website there definitely limitations on what is considered attractive and irritating.
The job of a website designer is one that is often two fold. A website designer is responsible for creating great designs as well as avoiding creating designs that are not attractive to the majority. This is sometimes difficult if a client insists in some of the irritating aspects of website designing.
If you are not sure of what is considered irritating, I have compiled a list of my five most irritating aspects that I hate to see in any website.
Pop Up Windows:
Pop up windows are number one on my list even though some marketers have found it to be effective. I personally have not spoken to anyone that likes annoying pop ups on their computer screen.
Loud Flash Presentations:
Flash intros are really dramatic and when used correctly can really grab a potential customers attention. My issues with flash presentations stems from the ones that are too loud and do not have an option of eliminating the sound. You should always leave the choice to the customer of whether or not they want to listen to the music.
Light Colored Fonts With A Light Background:
Light colored text on a website with a similar light background is very confusing. It makes the words extremely difficult to read. If your customers can not read the content of your website, then what is the purpose of creating a website in the first place.
Fonts That Are Too Big:
Big fonts are a big turn off in my book. Whenever I land on a website with big fonts, I generally turn the page quickly. It generally makes me feel like I am reading a Sesame Street book.
Too Much Clutter:
While a website that has a lot of good content is a good thing, a website that is unorganized will take make a visitor use the back browser fast. If you are going to have a lot of content, a good trick to use is drop down menus.
Creating a website that is appealing to many is an art that the experienced designers understand. What your client may find to be the best designed website, may not be as appealing to someone else. The key is to make websites that are moderate in order to not offend the masses.
